Spencer Schiller, WFU Student Government President

Hello Deacs,

My name is Spencer Schiller and I am your Student Government President for the 2017-18 school year. To begin, I would like to wish everyone good luck with the school year. For those of you who are experiencing their first year here – welcome, for all others, welcome back!

Introduction to Student Government:

Student Government would like to take this time to remind everyone that we are a democratic organization and fully open to any member of our school. All are welcome to attend Senate meetings at 7 PM every Tuesday beginning on September 19th. Freshmen interested in serving as a Senator will need to fill out an election packet. Election Packets will be released on September 5th and are available here at the Student Government website. They will also be given out at the Involvement Fair taking place on the lower quad from 3:30 to 6:00 PM on September 5th. Election packets will be due on September 11th with Freshmen elections taking place on the 18th.

Support for Charlottesville:

Along with Student Body Presidents from across the country, I have signed a resolution condemning the violence and hatred committed by extremist and white supremacy-based groups. As a Student Government, we will not sit idly by when bigotry, racism and blatant hatred rears its ugly head. We stand with UVA and urge other members of the Wake Forest community to do the same in solidarity with victims of this tragic display of violence. Last night, Wake Forest held a candlelight vigil to reflect as a community on our shared support of those affected by Charlottesville.

On September 5th & 6th, the Pro Humanitate Institute and the Humanities Institute will co-host The Charlottesville Teach-In, with sessions facilitated by Wake Forest faculty. We will offer sessions at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. each day. All WFU students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend. You can register at: http://pdc.wfu.edu/events/2909

On September 7th, PHI will host a public panel in Wait Chapel at 6:00 p.m. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry. We will host small group discussions for students at 7:30 p.m.

Mandatory Student Organization President and Treasurer Training:

In or order to access your funding or be eligible for future funding you must attend one of the following trainings on September 12th or 13th from 5:00 – 6:30 pm in Pugh Auditorium. If you have questions, please email Sydney Packard at packsr15@wfu.edu.

Homecoming Nominations:

It is time to submit your nominees for the 2017 Homecoming Court. Please collaborate with the president and/or treasurer of your student organization. Each organization may nominate two individuals from the Class of 2018, with a limit of one female and male nominee from each organization. Please finalize and submit your nominations by this Friday, September 1st at 5 pm.

As always, Student Government’s door is always open. Our office is located in Benson 304. We can’t wait to have another strong year, and look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for your time and Go Deacs.

Sincerely,

Spencer Schiller
Student Government President
